Following is information taken from the death certificate of David Wesley Stewart. It listed his residence as Hannah Picket Mill. Under occuupation he was listed as running cards in a cotton mill. It says that he last worked in this occupation in Nov. of 1935. Total years spent in this occupation was listed as Life. He was born in Scotland Co. His mother's maiden name was listed as Delia Morgan, his father listed as Arnold Stewart. The informant was listed as Wife, Laura Jane Stewart. Burial Place is Old Hundred. It appears that the date of death was Nov 9, 1935. The doctor says on the form that he last attended the deceased on Nov 1, 1935, and that death occurred at 9:00 on the 9th. The principal cause of death was listed as Active Pulminary Tuberculosis that was onset in 1930. The doctors name was B.B. Dalton. A curious thing about the date of birth is that the death certificate says he was born on February 4, 1877, while his tombstone says that he was born on April 5, 1876. The death certificate says that he was aged 58 years, 9 months, and 6 days, which would make the date on the certificate the correct birthdate. One source (Essie H. Stewart of Lumberton) says that David died in Chicago. This source also says that he had a twin sister that died at birth.
Clarence (Dad) worked for the city of R'ham in the water treatment plant. He retired from there about 1998/99. Mom was still working as Postmaster in Rowland, NC. Dads affliction with diabetes, which compounded any other medical problem he encountered, hastened the decline of his health since his retirement. In the late Summer/early Fall of 2004 Dad had surgery on his heart at Moore Regional Hospital to remove fluid from around his heart. The surgeon also removed the precardial sack from around the heart to prevent future fluid buildup (a controversial surgery). He was supposed to go home a couple of days after the surgery. Complications set in, his kidneys failed, and he remained in the hospital for more than a month before going home. He was still very week, and was having to go for dialysis 3 times a week. Mom had retired in January of 2004, and she has said that everything happens for a reason. She retired from the Postal Service in time to start a new job as caretaker for Dad. Mom & Dad moved back to Hamlet in late November of 2004. They moved into the first floor apartments of an apartment building that they owned on Henderson St. in Hamlet. Dad would be closer to his doctors and family. His health actually started improving after the move.
